I think most Pumpkins albums are reasonably unique (blah blah blah). But Adore's definitely the best and strikes the biggest chord with me.

Anymore, I can't hear the word 'adore' without Night Mare entering my head. It took me 12 years to come to terms with that being my favorite song from that record.

That was the song that stuck out to me most when I first listened to Adore however many years ago. It's still my favorite.

Same. It was my immediate favorite. Not sure about now. Shame is probably my fav now, but B! would be a very close 2nd.

For Martha was the stickout track for me. Nightmare was a close second.

In my head though for some reason Adore has always struck me as the most uniform or cohesive sp album (those aren't quite the right words). On a sidenote, I recently listened to the VH1 storytellers and I thought it was funny that Billy said The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete was about a murder and a ghost (though reading the lyrics now makes more sense). He's claimed that Today's tones of suicide are often overlooked, but I'd never even heard of this one and find it much more subtle.

![]() What an atmospheric song. A couple years ago there was a thread where we listed our top ten songs and BtNM what on TONS of lists. Deservedly so. |

Nightmare is, more or less, everything great about Adore summed up in one song

No albums other than Gish and Machina have a more consistent "album" feel to me, and Machina has too many dud/average songs to rank anywhere near as highly.
Adore is probably the most unique though because Gish was a distillation of quite a few years (88-91) and the style continued somewhat through SD whereas Adore really was a one off, and perhaps the last time the original band "successfully" collaborated on anything (since I suspect the Machina era was more bickering / Billy solo). |

Definitely agree on the cohesion of the album. Has a really uniform sound without any of the songs sounding alike.

I'd agree with this too. While I don't think it's the best song on the album, it definitely has all the sounds of the album wrapped into one. |

Agreed re: the comments about Behold the Night Mare summing up Adore.
Will, I got the impression from some of those Guitar World interviews that James was pretty heavily involved in Machina...not your take-away? |

Initially sure, but by the time D'arcy left had I really wonder how they could've been truly collaborating without a lot more drama than when they did. After the Arising! tour:

You can definitely hear James' guitar work on Machina, but you hear it more on Adore. E-bow!

not quite the best sp album, they lost jimmy chamberlin, changed their style and made what was essentially a dark and sad album dealing with billy's personal problems (the death of his mother and romantic problems). at the same time, though, it continued the good songwriting that was there on mellon collie and the infinite sadness. it's all about "annie-dog" and "blank page". it is the most unique in comparison to other sp albums. none of their other albums are really the same as adore and thefutureembrace.

I loved adore for the fact that it was such a departure without losing the niche that they always had. I think all their albums were departures from their previous work though, but none as far away like adore. It's still one of my favs, I don't care what Billy Corgan says about it.

Unique as in it's the most quiet of the albums? Yeah.
Unique as in most different sound from the rest? I dunno. |
