Where's Billy's influence?
What did The Smashing Pumpkins bring to rock and roll that is still out there today?
Not the Grunge movement. Something they alone contributed that didn't exist before them. |

His guitar tone. More octave chords. Re-introduced, for better or worse, concept albums with characters and costumes. That had gone away for a while before Mellon Collie.

Agreed with Wayne on the guitar stuff. Billy practically invented a slew of tones, styles, and recording techniques that never really existed in the same way before him, and has definitely been replicated since.

Although I'd say a lot of that credit should be shared with Butch Vig. The same guitar tones are on Nevermind. And the Mellon Collie guitar tones are not as memorable.

He wasn't the first, but Billy's done his best to promote the interests of female bassists.

Siamese Dream, mostly. It's difficult to put into words what one says when they are describing different "tones," but Billy fucked with his setup so obsessively, and Butch Vig worked so much magic on the guitar sounds and layering and stuff, that you just aren't going to hear much in the way of exact sound duplication before/after that record. The guitars are heavy, but remain bright and shimmery. When they are big, they are still distinct and their various elements are easily heard. The softs are whispery and twinkly . . . haha, sorry, I'm just trying to not get super technical but it sounds like I'm describing some fairy land of guitar-playing cherubs. On MCIS, on the contrary, the guitars are heavy and dark sounding . . . even dull at times (not necessarily a bad thing, depending on opinion).

Sorry, yes, I understood this; I'm looking for audio/YouTube examples of bands where the Pumpkins influence is clear or at least present.

In China the few people I talked to who knew the Pumpkins all immediately said, "Yes, the band with the Japanese guitar player." It really is quite strange when you think about how few American rock bands have ethnic minorities. They are almost all entirely white.

Ahhh, sorry, my mistake. I'll dig around Youtube when I get home from work to see if I can find some good examples.

For guitar tones, the Deftones have always come to mind. I think their tone is just a heavier version of Siamese Dream. Fuzzy, spacey, not very aggressive. |

Yes. As has been noted before, one of the best things about the Pumpkins.
Anyone have any other favorite bands that really switch things up live, year-in, year-out? |

No segue except "piano covers," I was just curious to see if that Japanese singer Angela Aki had any videos on YouTube of her "Today" cover, and I see she is no stranger to translating English pop songs into Japanese and covering them:
The best part is the "BAY-baaaAAAaay!!!" right in the middle.

someone who reviewed the SP albums a while ago put it into words pretty well
"cock rock with an indie heart" did that really exist before gish, sd, pi...? anyway, there's definitely a quality to their music that wasn't there before. they were rocking and chillin' like villains at the same time

"cock rock with an indie heart," ha. Interesting to think about, maybe that really is what the Pumpkins perfected.

I hear no cock rock in the Pumpkins. Maybe some of the Gish riffs?

Not sure if you're joking. I think a lot of those Superchrist/United States-type songs are cock-rocky. But I may not really know what cock rock actually is? I think of it as really bombastic, "look at me"-style rock & roll. What band(s) is/are the most quintessentially cock rock?
