Importance of a drummer
I know someone here has a sig 'a band is only as good as it's drummer'. Is there some truth to that, i'm not a musician but at the end of the day astral planes and widow wake my mind are crappy songs regardless of the drummer..i know jimmy can take a great song and pick it up to a new level but now that corgan is making relative crap does it make a difference that jimmy isn't here?

Having a good drummer is important, but they'll never make the band. Most drummers are middle of the road. Some bands with mediocre drummers are amazing, some are fine, and some blow. A drummer can only enhance what's already there. Of course there's the rare exception like "Superchrist", where Jimbo makes the song.

For an average SP album like Zeitgeist, having JC do the drumming was really important I'd say, whereas yeah the TBK tracks that have had Mike Byrne have noticeably annoying drumming imo.

Smashing Pumpkins fans have definitely been spoiled with Jimmy though. But I agree, Mike has been noticeably bad so far, which might be more rare than being a noticeably good drummer.

(Not answering for Wayne) The White Stripes are a good example of an amazing band with a shitty drummer. What's interesting is that Meg White's drumming is technically horrible - like, only been playing for a few months horrible - but the dynamic she has with Jack (who is a phenomenal musician) just works, and it works extremely well.

Wait you're falling into the trap > A drummer doesn't have to be technically amazing to make the band 'good' or 'bad'. It's about what the drummer brings to the band, this can be technique for a band like Dream Theatre but equally it can be feeling for, say, the Velvet Underground. These bands would be, arguably, radically different (better or worse, i guess) had they had any other drummer.
But yeah, i'd be interested in which bands you're thinking of wayne.

I'm talking about almost every band really. I mean in my mind you have the few drummers you notice for being exceptionally good: Jimmy Chamberlin, Carter Beauford, etc. and the few you notice that aren't: Meg White! I think everyone else is just mediocre. Most are good, sure, but they're not making themselves stand out in one way or another.

Alex, yeah, i don't like White Stripes, i think they are far from amazing, bold yes. But if they had a technically amazing drummer, you just wouldn't have got the same songs, energy & feeling. It can be pretty subjective really.
A good drummer is good for the band. That's what i'm trying to say. Flip it around, if you had a shit hot ska band, but they get a drummer who couldn't play an off beat to save his life, you're just going to have a shit ska band.

It's no secret that I love Jimmy's drumming. It's expressive and interesting. It has tons of energy that you feel, and yet can be sophisticated...I remember hearing Machina and being glad that the drums were back. The drums were the best part of Zeitgeist for me. So yeah whoever up there said we were spoiled, I agree. I don't think Billy has to have drums to write a great song (33, Chicago songs, to Shiela) but he does need them - or at least some other musician to add some chemistry to the mix - to rock out. I think Billy has some great songs still left in him but we may have to get used to never hearing another musician's personality in his music again. Like Jimmy - his personality came through when he played his drums. Without that it's not going to be a rock band dynamic. I appreciate the other three now more than ever, not just Jimmy's phenomenal talent, but also D'Arcy and James. They were all individuals and that made the Pumpkins a great rock band. Meg White was mentioned as a great example - it's not always just how technically gifted the person is but all the qualities they bring to the table, including chemistry with the other bandmates. I can't imagine this 19 year old standing up to Billy or creating the kind of chemistry that the original Pumpkins had. He's good enough, I mean the drums on the new songs very well may sound like Billy wanted him to play or asked him to play it...I wouldn't 100% blame the kid for the drumming. But it's not the same, whether he's a technically great drummer or not, as a bandmate that stands up and adds their own spice to it, y'know? Well see. Not holding my breath, but I am hoping that Billy releases some more songs I like. And they don't even have to have drums. |

Yeah but Kenny Buttery on John Wesley Harding doesn't stand out as in "wow, check out the amazing drumming", i wouldn't have thought. But to me, he's fucking killing in those songs; perfect feel, perfect parts - making the songs better, but by being understated.

Oh I'm definitely not debating that. I guess I should have specified from the beginning, I'm saying what a casual listener is going to pick up and notice. And in that respect, I don't think the drumming is usually very important. I've heard multiple people who know nothing about music or drumming comment on Jimmy though. Meaning, he makes a noticeable difference to anyone listening. |

Indeed, Jimmy is exceptional through his technical ability, creativity, bombast > his 'uniqueness' makes him stand out.
On the other hand we have Bryne, he's bad yes, because most everyone notices that he's both out of synch, technically and with the feeling for the songs. After three years he may have found a bit more of a voice, just at the moment it's in conflict with the music. Like Jeff and Ginger took 2 years to begin to synch up with the band. BC & JC were pretty much in perfect synch most all of the time.
