The Hazards of Love 'metal' riff
Is a pumpkins riff. And if you can't find it somewhere on Pistachio Medley, you can't tell me Colin Meloy wasn't listening to the pumpkins growing up. i mean seriously. listen to that. it sounds like billy is playing the flippin' guitar every time it comes in. i apologize if some one has pointed this out on a previous thread, but it is just bloody obvious to me (i got hazards of love today, and haven't been on blamo in years).
i know some of you pumpkins fans must be decemberists fans now, so don't act you don't know what i'm talking about.

well it reoccurs in x number of times. 'the queen's rebuke' and 'a bower scene' are two it appears in. don't get me wrong, it's friggin' awesome, it just reaks of billy.

i didn't care much for the latest Decemberists album until I listened to a few songs like A Bower Scene and The Wanting Comes in Waves by themselves. It's no Crane Wife, but it's not a bad album if you like their style. But actually I had no idea there were SP riff similarities. A lot of the SP "metal" riffs (esp. of the MCIS era) seem quite simple and generic anyway and ripped off from Sabbath, etc. to begin with!

It all makes sense:
Colin Meloy = Meloy, Colin = Mellon Collie = MCIS!! |

I think it was on Blamo years ago, there was some argument where someone got called out for exalting "sabbath like riffs," but I can't remember why it was funny other than the expression "sabbath like riffs" struck me as hilarious.

I didn't hear anything from The Hazards of Love until I saw them live over the summer, when they performed the entire thing, start to finish. I think seeing it live first helped. I like it, it's a good album to listen to as a whole, like when traveling or something (but maybe that's just me).

I can't say the "riff" in the Queen's Rebuke is wow-ing me. You guys are talking about the plodding, repetitive guitars?
![]() I really like the music--has a very epic feel to it. I could get into this. But I don't really hear Pumpkins, nor to I hear a "rock your face off" riff. Just me? |

Pretty much.
Colin Meloy was born in 1974, so his formative musical years were hardly listening to teh b0lly and co. Perhaps he had listened to some of the same records that teh b0lly had listened to? (crazy talk I know) On an unrelated note - Colin Meloy's 33 1/2 book about "Let it Be" by the Replacements is a rewarding read. |

i've listened to that riff tons of time and have seen it live...not once have i thought it sounded like a billy riff....it doesn't really sound like a decemberists riff either. kind of just a good shred more than anything.
i agree with the people who said that you really needed to see them play the whole "hazards of love" album live to fully appreciate it. great stuff. great band. |
